Gujarat worst than UP, WB

Even as the Gujarat police boast of getting ‘President’s Colours’ for their ‘efficient’ work, the cops should have shown more seriousness to addressing the issue of custodial deaths as the latest figures from the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) have put the state in a bad light on this front.

Gujarat, which has a population of 6 crore, and considered to have a modest crime record than Uttar Pradesh, having a population of 20 crore, and West Bengal, which has a population of around 9 crore, is ahead of the two states in custodial deaths. According to the NCRB, Gujarat has reported 180 custodial deaths between 2001 and 2016 whereas Uttar Pradesh reported 128 custodial deaths and West Bengal 107. India saw 1,557 custodial deaths between 2001 and 2016.
