GUJARAT
• Govt’s apathy unabated towards monuments

 Though the Gujarat Government spent around Rs 3000 crore for building the world’s tallest statue, Statue of Unity(SOU) and still spending more to popularise it as the international/national tourist destination but it does not have few thousands to even guard the state’s archaeological monuments which are several centuries old. Archaeological monuments in state are divided in to two categories. One group of monuments managed by the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) while other by the State Archaeological and Museum department.

 There are around 362 state monuments under the jurisdiction of the state archaeology department but the department does not have manpower or resources to manage them.

 Few years back the state government made a scheme to give some token funds to local village Panchayat to give grants for the upkeep but that too has not succsseded so the state government aims to replicate centre’s scheme like “monument Mitra’’ to conserve state owned monuments however for this too also state government has not shown any active interest to motivate citizens to be moument mitra.

 Due to lack of security and conservation activities many of the key monuments have been damaged, encroached upon or used by anti-social elements.

 Despite Ahmedabad got the world heritage city most of the archaeological monuments are without any security or conservation staff.

 Last year the state government demanded additional funds for the conservation of the state regulated archaeological monuments.
