Gujarat: Only 2% of Rs 2.17 lakh crore budget set aside for women

Though the Gujarat government claims its budgets are designed to empower women, the actual financial allocation for women has been limited. After analyzing the Gujarat government’s gender budgets, Mahender Jethmalani of Pathey Budget Center said: “The state government must be appreciated for presenting gender budget statements since 2014-15 to earmark more resources for gender equality and to address women’s concerns, needs, and vulnerabilities.

The gender budget under Category A is Rs 4,505.89 crore, Jethmalani said, which is just 2.07% of the state’s total budget of Rs 2,17,287 crore. Currently, 24 departments report GB (Gender Budget) allocations under Category A (100% women-specific schemes) and Category B (33% to 99% mixed schemes). Of the 24 departments, only 15 have formulated 100% women-specific schemes.
