  • Bullet train systems to flash early warning during disasters

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project – the prestigious Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train – will have early warning systems to safeguard its running during natural disasters like earthquakes, floods or wind storms.
  • A comprehensive disaster management system will be introduced for safety of passengers who are expected to board this high-speed train that is expected to start running from 2023 onwards.

  • To prevent any possible accident of train due to earthquake, Japan’s Shinkansen technology which is being adopted for India’s first bullet train, will have early earthquake detection system.

  • There will be 22 seismometers that will be installed all along the track and we will be installing six such seismometers in three most vulnerable seismic zones including Kutch in Gujarat, Koyna-Warna region and Latur-Osmanabad in Maharashtra.

  • The seismometers will detect the primary waves of any earthquake and immediately signal for a shutdown of the power supply of the train which will instantly stop the train before a second wave, which usually is the main cause of the damage, hits the ground.

  • Similarly, there will be continuous monitoring of wind speeds as 14 anemometers will be installed at locations where strong winds are expected.

  • “If the wind speed increases beyond 30 metres per second or 108 kmph there shall be an alarm in operation control centre (OCC) at Sabarmati so that the train can be immediately stopped.
