  • Rajasthan refuses to send male GIB to Gujarat

  • Gujarat, which is staring at the prospect of the great Indian bustard (GIB) going extinct in the state, may have to pack off its six remaining female GIBs to Rajasthan to have them breed.
  • This seems to be the only option left, with the Rajasthan government reluctant to send a male GIB to Gujarat.

  • The Gujarat government should catch all its female GIBs and send them to Rajasthan. Rajasthan has already set up a breeding centre with the help from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and Abu Dhabi.

  • According to wildlife experts, GIBs were earlier found in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh but their numbers have fallen to just 4-5 in all of these except Rajasthan. In Rajasthan too, without concerted efforts, their population has declined drastically from 250 to 50-60 in the last 20 years. Gujarat which had 40 GIBs in the 2005, now has just six left.
