● Gujarat: ‘Healthy’ camel milk will now have longer shelf life
The humped beast of the desert is being ‘milked’ to the fullest.
Within months of launching fresh camel milk, home-grown dairy giant Amul has increased the shelf life of camel milk to ensure that the milk procured from the ship of the desert reaches across the length and breadth of the country.
The shelf life of Amul fresh camel milk was just four days. Now, country’s largest milk co-operative has launched long shelf life PET bottles which can be consumed till 180 days from the time of packaging.
The launch of fresh camel milk had faced teething troubles because of its short shelf life. Kutch’s Sarhad dairy which had started procuring 2,000 litres per day had to reduce its procurement to nearly 1,300 litres per day within a month of camel milk’s launch in February. The dairy’s capacity is to procure 3,000 litres per day which can be extended to 6,000 litres per day. With longer shelf life, Sarhad dairy is now hoping that sale of camel milk will increase generating more income for camel breeders.
