DMPQ: India is becoming a hub for non communicable diseases? Suggest the way to deal with the menace of non communicable disease.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, tend to be of long duration and are the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and behaviours factors. The main types of NCDs are cardiovascular diseases (like heart attacks and stroke), cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma) and diabetes.

NCDs disproportionately affect people in low- and middle-income countries where more than three quarters of global NCD deaths – 32million – occur. NCDs dominate the list of the top causes of death in India. Heart disease is at the top. In 2016 a staggering 28.1 percent of all deaths in India were caused by heart conditions. Overall, 61.8 percent of all deaths in the country were caused by NCDs in 2016.

Solutions:

  1. More focus on improving life style especially eating habit : Say no to processed food, trans fat, cheap foods and say yes to fruits, vegetables etc.
  2. Emphasis on Yoga, daily exercise etc.
  3. More emphasis on good health from school itself, strict ban on selling of cheap foods outside school.
  4. Regular check up or annual chek up of body for identification of diseases.
  5. Genetic screening and Genetic counselling for prospective bride groom
  6. Early detection and management of hypertension is necessary to prevent complications, but shortfall of trained health workforce, particularly in rural areas, is a challenge.
  7. Ensuring availability of safety gears to the worker working in mines industry.

NCD is mostly related to life style and the change incurred due to the change in nature of work. Exercise need to be part and parcel of life with good dietary habit. Stress and hyper tension has to be reduced.
