In a concerted attempt to improve the lives of disabled persons in the state, the Gujarat government has increased aid to disabled persons under several welfare schemes even as the state cabinet has cleared a proposal to form a corporation, Divyang Jan Corporation, that will oversee implementation of schemes for the disabled.

The grant for aid and appliances of disabled persons, which was Rs 10,000 since 2010, has been doubled to Rs 20,000. Children staying in ‘divyang gruhs’ will now get a stipend of Rs 2,160 instead of Rs 1,500. The grant amount has been increased in other schemes as well.

According to department officials, about 1.8% of the state’s population consists of disabled individuals. In terms of numbers, between 12 and 13 lakh persons in the state suffer from some form of disability.
