- Gujarat’s social sector lags behind on spending front
- Despite its tall claims of reaching out to poor and marginalized sections of society, chief minister Vijay Rupani’s government has not been able to spend its social sector budget allocations, despite three quarters of 2018-19 having elapsed.
- Though compared to its spending in 2017-18 (55%), the state government has spent a higher proportion (61%) of its budget allocation in three quarters (April to December 2018). However, the larger part of its spending is in non-social sectors or on paying salaries of government employees.
- Social sector departments have shown the worst performance in spending. According to the finance department’s official figures, women and child development (38.52%), labour and employment (39.18%), social justice and empowerment (50.47%) and tribal development (46.73%) are the worst performing departments. Many other departments involved in public service have spent barely over 50% of their budgetary allocation.
