GUJARAT
- Cotton output estimated to dip to 88L bales in Gujarat
- Despite increase in area under cotton cultivation this kharif season, the production is set to decline due to reduction in yield following deficient rainfall. Cotton output in Gujarat, the largest producer of the natural fibre, is expected to dip by 16% in 2018-19.
- According to the latest estimates released by the Cotton Association of India (CAI), cotton output in Gujarat is projected to be 88 lakh bales (one bale weighs 170 kg) in 2018-19 as against 105 lakh bales in 2017-18.
- Market players opine that production is going to decline due to erratic rainfall adversely affecting the yield this year. As a result, the output is estimated to be lower despite cotton acreage across Gujarat increasing this kharif season.
- The data compiled by the state agriculture department show that the area under cotton cultivation in the state this year increased to 27.12 lakh hectares from 26.41 lakh hectares in the kharif season of 2017.
- The projected cotton output for Gujarat in 2018-19 includes 66 lakh bales produced within the state and around 20 lakh bales that arrive in the state for ginning from other states.
- Across India, this year’s cotton crop is estimated to be lower at 343.25 lakh bales in 2018-19 due to unfavourable weather conditions. The cotton output stood at 365 lakh bales in 2017-18.
